In this project, I designed a Xiangyun lantern that combines cultural meaning with light and texture. I sketched ideas, tested different 3D prints, and refined the size and form. Inspired by Jordan Fleming’s work, I experimented with tissue textures to create atmosphere. From this process, I learned the value of iteration and how design can connect culture, emotion, and function.
Making Process
I sketched ideas and chose the Xiangyun lantern. The first pink print failed and was too small.
I resized it and printed a grey lantern, which looked better but was incomplete.
After fixing the printer, the final white lantern came out perfect.
I tried a wrinkled tissue texture, but it was too thin.
Using thinner tissue layers with glue and shaping by hand worked best.
INTERVIEW QOUTES.
“ I would rather eat beans to be able to do the things I love then working ”
JORDAN FLEMING :
“ Keep making works alongside of your work, it keeps the fire alive ”
“ You are in the best state in Australia to be pursuing design ”
XIANGYUN LANTERN
Jordan Fleming’s work strongly influenced my approach, especially how she uses light to shape mood and perception. Her textured lamps inspired me to create a Xiang Yun lantern, a cloud symbol in Chinese culture that represents luck, peace, and harmony.
When lit, the lantern glows warmly; when dimmed, the Xiang Yun shape casts soft, moving shadows that bring a sense of calm and wonder.
